Something broke, or something is throbbing, and there is no insurance card in your wallet. So the question is not really what to do. It is what this is going to cost before you pick up the phone.
Straight answer, no hedging.
First: is this a dentist or the emergency room?
Go to the ER if you have bleeding that will not stop after 15 minutes of pressure, trouble breathing or swallowing because of facial swelling, a possible broken jaw, or a fever alongside facial swelling.
For everything else, a dental office is both the cheaper and the more useful option. An ER can give you pain medication and antibiotics. It cannot fix the tooth, which means you pay for the ER visit and then still pay a dentist afterward.
What emergency treatment costs
These are typical Michigan ranges. Yours will land somewhere inside them depending on what is actually wrong.
| Treatment | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Emergency exam and x-rays | $100 - $300 |
| Simple tooth extraction | $150 - $400 |
| Surgical extraction | $200 - $600 |
| Temporary filling or repair | $100 - $400 |
| Root canal, front tooth | $700 - $1,200 |
| Root canal, molar | $900 - $1,500 |
| Crown to restore a broken tooth | $1,000 - $2,000 |
| Abscess drainage | $150 - $500 |
The number that matters most today is the first one. An emergency exam and x-rays get you a diagnosis and get you out of pain. Everything below that line is a decision you make afterward, with real information, not at 9pm with a swollen face.
The cheap answer is usually the expensive one
Two things that cost people the most money, both of which feel like saving money at the time.
Waiting. A cavity that needed a filling becomes a tooth that needs a root canal and a crown. An infection that needed drainage becomes an infection that spreads. The bill grows faster than the problem does.
Pulling it because it is cheaper today. An extraction is the lowest number on that table, and sometimes it is genuinely the right call. But a gap in your mouth is not a finished story. The teeth on either side drift, the bone in that spot thins, and replacing that tooth later costs several times what saving it would have. If we can save it, we will tell you so, and we will tell you what it costs to save.
If you cannot pay for all of it right now
Say so out loud when you call. It changes what we can do for you, and it is not a conversation anyone here finds awkward.
We can phase it. Getting you out of pain and stopping the infection is one appointment. Rebuilding the tooth properly is another, and it does not have to be next week.
Our membership plan. If you have no coverage at all, we run in-house plans that cover your preventive care for one annual price, with discounts on other treatment. No claims, no waiting periods, no annual maximum. Call for current pricing.
HSA and FSA funds can be used for dental treatment if you have them.
Ask about payment options when you call, and we will tell you what is available.
What to do in the next hour
Knocked-out tooth. Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if it is dirty, do not scrub. Try to put it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk. Get to a dentist inside 30 minutes if at all possible.
Broken tooth. Warm salt water rinse, cold compress on the outside of the cheek, cover any sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum, bring any pieces with you.
Severe toothache. Warm salt water, floss gently around it in case something is trapped, ibuprofen for the pain and swelling, cold compress and not heat.
Swelling in the face. Call now. Do not wait for morning.

Not knowing the number is usually worse than the number itself.
