What is Scaling and Root Planing?
This thorough cleaning removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from below the gum line where regular brushing can't reach. It's typically recommended for patients with gingivitis or moderate to severe periodontal disease.
The Procedure
After a thorough examination (which may include X-rays), Drs. Jenkins or Borowiec will determine if you need this treatment.
Scaling: Using specialized tools, we remove calculus and plaque from tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line. An ultrasonic scaling tool may be used along with antimicrobial irrigation. Root Planing: We smooth the root surfaces to remove embedded bacteria and toxins. This promotes healing and makes it harder for bacteria to reattach.Local anesthesia may be used for your comfort.
After Treatment
We may recommend:
- Antibiotics to control infection

- More frequent follow-up cleanings
