Deep Cleaning: What is Scaling and Root Planing?

If you've been told you need a "deep cleaning," you may be wondering what that means. Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease that can help save your teeth.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

This thorough cleaning removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from below the gum line where regular brushing can't reach. It's typically recommended for patients with gingivitis or moderate to severe periodontal disease.

The Procedure

After a thorough examination (which may include X-rays), Drs. Jenkins or Borowiec will determine if you need this treatment.

Scaling: Using specialized tools, we remove calculus and plaque from tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line. An ultrasonic scaling tool may be used along with antimicrobial irrigation. Root Planing: We smooth the root surfaces to remove embedded bacteria and toxins. This promotes healing and makes it harder for bacteria to reattach.

Local anesthesia may be used for your comfort.

After Treatment

We may recommend:

Benefits of Deep Cleaning

Prevents disease progression: Bacteria from gum infections can travel through your bloodstream and affect your heart and respiratory system. Protects against tooth loss: When gum pockets exceed 3mm deep, risk of periodontal disease increases. Deep cleaning helps reverse this progression. Improves appearance and breath: The procedure removes stains and bacteria that cause bad breath.

When Surgery May Be Needed

If deep pockets persist after scaling and root planing, surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health. We'll discuss all your options and create the best treatment plan for you.
