Just had a composite (white) filling placed? Here's what you need to know about caring for your restoration.
Immediately After Your Appointment
Your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the procedure. During this time:
- Avoid chewing until numbness wears off completely
- Don't drink hot beverages until you can feel normally
- Be careful not to bite your tongue, lip, or cheek while numb
What Sensitivity is Normal?
It's normal to experience some sensitivity after a filling:
- Hot and cold sensitivity is common and should improve
- Pressure sensitivity may occur due to composite shrinkage during curing
- Injection site soreness is also normal
Each tooth responds differently—sensitivity may last a few days to over a week.
Pain Management
If you experience discomfort:
- Ibuprofen (Motrin), Acetaminophen (Tylenol), or aspirin work well
- Take one tablet every 4-6 hours as needed
- If sensitivity persists beyond a few days or increases, contact us
The Good News About Composite Fillings
Unlike silver (amalgam) fillings, composite fillings are fully set when you leave the office. You can chew with them as soon as the anesthetic wears off!
Why We Use Composite Fillings

- Beautiful and unnoticeable appearance
- Add strength to weakened teeth
- Bond directly to tooth structure for a tight fit
