A healthier smile doesn't require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small, consistent habits make the biggest difference. Here are five tips our team recommends to all our patients.
1. Brush for the Full Two Minutes
Most people brush for about 45 seconds. That's not enough time to effectively remove plaque from all tooth surfaces. Set a timer or use an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to ensure you're brushing long enough.
Pro tip: Divide your mouth into four quadrants and spend 30 seconds on each.2. Don't Skip the Floss
We know flossing isn't anyone's favorite activity, but it removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where your toothbrush can't reach. If traditional floss is difficult, try:
- Floss picks
- Water flossers
- Interdental brushes
The best flossing tool is the one you'll actually use.
3. Stay Hydrated
Water is your smile's best friend. It:
- Rinses away food particles
- Helps maintain saliva production
- Contains fluoride (in most tap water) that strengthens enamel
- Has zero sugar
Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily, especially after meals.
4. Limit Snacking
Every time you eat, the bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack tooth enamel. Frequent snacking means constant acid attacks. If you do snack, choose tooth-friendly options like:
- Cheese
- Nuts
- Raw vegetables
- Plain yogurt
5. Keep Your Regular Checkups
Even with excellent home care, professional cleanings remove tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can't address. Regular exams also catch small problems before they become big (and expensive) ones.
Most people should visit the dentist every six months, though some may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health status.
